New Year Warning as Birmingham Bus Lane Camera Catches More Drivers After Relocation

Drivers in Birmingham should be aware of changes to bus lane enforcement as a key city centre camera has been repositioned, resulting in a significant increase in detected violations. The bus lane camera along Broad Street, specifically at Berkley Street outbound near the Library of Birmingham, was moved by city officials to better capture vehicles entering restricted bus and Metro-only zones.

Since the relocation, fines have surged dramatically. Data reveals offences at this spot jumped from a few hundred each month to 5,508 in September and 3,557 in October 2025 alone. This spike indicates that many drivers previously went undetected, suggesting that tens of thousands more could face penalties this year if they continue to ignore the rules.

The bus lane cameras were first introduced along Broad Street, a well-known nightlife area, one year ago and have already caught nearly 25,000 motorists entering restricted zones in 2025. The Midland Metro runs the full length of Broad Street, emphasizing the importance of keeping the lanes clear.

Bus lane violations incur a £30 fine, which doubles to £60 if unpaid within 14 days. A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council explained the recent increase in recorded offences is due to a technical adjustment of the camera’s region of interest (ROI), improving accuracy rather than reflecting a change in driver behavior.

Motorists should remain vigilant in 2026 and avoid bus and Metro-only lanes to evade fines and contribute to smoother city transport.
