New School Summer Holiday Proposal in England Could See Holidays Start a Week Earlier

Over 200,000 pupils in Essex could benefit from an earlier start to their summer holidays under a proposal being considered by Essex County Council. The council, led by Reform UK, is exploring whether moving the summer break one week earlier in July from 2029 could help families find more affordable holiday options.

Sam Journet, the council’s education cabinet member, explained at a meeting, “We are looking at taking the school holiday time out of sync with the current educational system,” aiming to ease holiday expenses for parents.

However, not everyone is convinced. Conservative opposition leader Lee Scott expressed doubts about potential savings, warning that businesses might simply raise prices earlier: “My only concern is the companies will cotton on to it and raise their prices the week before. We will start the higher prices a week early.”

Pepe Di’Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), highlighted both the potential advantages and drawbacks: “It is possible that shifting the start of the summer holiday a week earlier could mean cheaper holiday deals for families – though it is likely that prices would rise if other areas follow suit.”

An Essex County Council spokesperson emphasized that no final decisions have been made. The council will “explore whether a change to the traditional pattern of the calendar is feasible” and stated that any significant proposal would involve consultations with schools, parents, and other stakeholders.

Local parent Rebecca Allerton, who has experienced the cost of holidaying during term time, said she saved thousands despite fines but is unsure if the proposed change would have a major impact. “In principle it is a lovely idea,” she said. “But then I also think private schools have already been off by a week; it might not make much of a difference. I’m glad they are doing something; it is a very tricky subject.”
