New Road Safety Campaign Targets Drivers Over 70 with Focus on Three Key Precautions

A new road safety campaign in Northern Ireland is calling on drivers over the age of 70 to be extra vigilant on the roads. The Commissioner for Older People has championed the Share the Road to Zero initiative, aiming to reduce accidents and improve safety for senior drivers.

The campaign highlights three essential reminders for older drivers: stay alert to changing road conditions, ensure driving licences are regularly updated especially in the face of illness or health changes, and understand the specific renewal requirements for those aged 70 and above.

The Commissioner emphasized the urgency of this campaign, stating, “Too many older individuals are seriously injured on our roads, whether as drivers or pedestrians, and this is an issue that demands our attention. Although older drivers tend to cause fewer serious collisions than younger drivers, when accidents do occur, they are often more severe and recovery takes longer.”

With winter’s icy roads and shorter daylight hours presenting added hazards, the Commissioner urged senior drivers to take extra safety precautions. She also encouraged everyone to monitor their health and manage conditions that might impact driving ability, helping maintain independence safely for as long as possible.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins expressed her support, thanking the Commissioner for raising awareness about safe driving practices among older drivers. “Over 95% of road deaths result from human error,” Kimmins noted. “By taking personal responsibility and following proper steps after illness or health changes, especially for those over 70, we can collectively reduce fatalities.”

The Minister underscored the importance of mindset shifts, warning that without changes in attitudes and behaviors, the number of road deaths will continue to rise.
