A new playground at Lickey Hills Country Park is now set to open next month, following delays caused by unforeseen ground conditions and recent adverse weather. The inclusive play area, situated near the visitor centre and café in the popular country park straddling the border between Birmingham and Worcestershire, was initially scheduled for completion in July.
Construction was hindered over the summer due to previously unidentified underground services and other site challenges, which required additional design modifications and building work. Birmingham City Council provided an update confirming that the play area is now anticipated to be finished by October 2026.
The council added that the terraces beneath the new play area will remain fenced off until the grass has been successfully established. They expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding as they work to deliver a significantly improved facility for local families and visitors.

The planned playground features a variety of equipment designed to cater for children of all ages and abilities. Among the highlights are a rocking boat, tall swings, a circular basket swing, a junior section with an adventure lookout tower, climbing access challenges including a twisted net and balancing rope bridge, a slide, climbing wall, banister bars, and lookout binoculars offering views over the Lickeys.
Additional play elements include a racking plank bridge, overhead ladder, and a double hammock area intended for socialising. The toddler adventure zone will feature a cascading bridge, two-way talk tubes, a crawl-through shop window, and an infant steel slide.
The former playground, which has now been completely removed, was considered “not fit for purpose” and was frequently affected by flooding. The new inclusive area aims to provide a safe, engaging, and accessible environment for children and families to enjoy.
Visitors and local residents are encouraged to look forward to the enhanced play facilities set to open in the coming month, adding to the natural charm and amenities of Lickey Hills Country Park.
