New Pavement Parking Crackdown to Launch in Birmingham

Birmingham drivers should prepare for a new crackdown on pavement parking as the city council moves to gain powers to tackle rule-breakers on designated streets. The upcoming changes will ban pavement parking in select areas across the city, focusing efforts on making sidewalks safer and more accessible.

This initiative is part of a national push to give local authorities stronger enforcement capabilities. Birmingham City Council plans to apply to the Government for these powers and intends to target specific locations such as the city centre, busy roads, and known congestion hotspots rather than imposing a blanket ban.

Once the new rules take effect, likely later this year or early next year, signs will be installed in affected areas to inform motorists. Drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with the new regulations to avoid penalties.

The crackdown follows years of advocacy aimed at improving safety for vulnerable groups including people with disabilities, elderly residents, and parents with young children. Councillor Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the importance of keeping pavements clear to support safe walking and cycling.

“We welcome the Government’s decision to grant councils new powers to keep pavements clear,” said Mahmood. “These measures will make our pavements safer, more accessible, and inclusive for everyone. They also align with our Birmingham Transport Plan’s goal to reduce reliance on private cars by encouraging active travel.”

The council hopes these changes will remove barriers caused by inconsiderate and illegal parking, which impede mobility aids and contribute to road collisions, ultimately fostering safer and healthier communities throughout the city.
