New Mandatory Eyesight and Cognitive Tests Proposed for Drivers Over 70 in England

The UK government is considering introducing two significant mandatory tests for drivers aged 70 and above across England. Currently, there are over 6.3 million full licence holders aged 70 and over in Great Britain, a number that has surged by 60% since 2012, according to Labour Party government data.

In an effort to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving elderly motorists, the government is exploring compulsory eyesight checks and cognitive assessments. A spokesperson from the Department for Transport stated, “Road safety is an absolute priority, and we are committed to ensuring all drivers are fit to drive safely. We continue to consider evidence on how best to protect all road users while supporting people to remain mobile and independent.”

The proposal has received mixed reactions from the public. One driver in their 70s said, “My eyesight is nearly perfect, but many people don’t have good eyesight, do not get regular eye tests, and don’t wear glasses even when they need them. These changes make sense.” However, another raised concerns about potential discrimination, saying, “Older drivers were previously classed as low risk with better insurance offers. Sight tests should be required for all drivers, not just older ones.”

The Department for Transport consultation highlights that several options, including mandatory eyesight tests and cognitive assessments during licence renewal, could improve safety outcomes for older drivers and others sharing the road.

In Great Britain, once drivers turn 70, their licence entitlement expires and must be renewed every three years. During renewal, drivers must legally declare they meet eyesight standards and disclose any medical conditions affecting driving ability.
