Matthew Clifford’s journey to becoming a pub landlord began surprisingly late—he didn’t try Guinness until last November. After tasting a pint in Northern Ireland, however, Matthew was inspired to bring a top-quality Irish bar experience to Birmingham.
Clancy’s, located on Harborne High Street, has taken over the spot formerly occupied by Wingers Tap Room. The name honors a friend’s son and reflects Matthew’s personal connection to the venue.
“I’ve always wanted my own bar,” Matthew told BirminghamLive. “But you need to be at a point in life where you can afford it—you’re not managing a pub at 18, closer to 44 is when it happens.”

While Clancy’s will be known for serving quality pints of Guinness, its pies are also set to draw crowds. Rourke’s bakery will provide a variety of savory pies, including Guinness and ale flavors, with customers able to enjoy them on-site or via delivery straight to their door.
Matthew, who also runs the construction company Brickscape, has taken a hands-on approach by helping build the pub, including installing bathrooms and fitting a cellar. Since starting the project last October, he has worked tirelessly to create a venue that offers more than just drinks.
“This is a smaller venue, perfect for my first venture, but I have plans to expand to multiple locations,” he shared. “There’s nothing like this on this side of the city—an independent Irish bar with affordable drinks.”
The buzz around Clancy’s is already palpable, with locals constantly inquiring about the opening date. Matthew has built many friendships in Harborne over the years, ensuring that the bar will have a strong community vibe from day one.
“Our prices will reflect community values. For example, a Guinness won’t cost £6 here; it will be £4.50,” he explained. “We’re aiming to be a hub for golf societies and offer live entertainment on weekends.”
While the official opening date is yet to be announced, Clancy’s is guaranteed to be welcoming guests well before St. Patrick’s Day.
Find Clancy’s at 152 High Street, Harborne, B17 9PN, and get ready to enjoy affordable drinks, hearty pies, and great company.
