New Home for Midlands War Heroes Memorial

A poignant memorial commemorating 53 former pupils of a Dudley school who lost their lives in World War One has found a new, prominent home at Dudley Council House.

The plaque, once displayed at the Sir Gilbert Claughton School on Blowers Green Road, was relocated following a dedicated campaign led by local historian John Hale. Since the school’s closure in 1990, the memorial had been stored away, awaiting a suitable place for public recognition.

John Hale expressed his satisfaction at the plaque’s restoration and public display: “The 53 former pupils named on this memorial served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice. Though many are buried far from home, they remain cherished sons of Dudley. It’s only right they are honoured here more than a century later.”

The school, which opened in 1904 as Dudley Upper Standard School, underwent several name changes before becoming Sir Gilbert Claughton Grammar Technical School in 1957, named after the Worcestershire-born businessman and politician. After its closure, the building served as The Claughton Centre until it fell into disrepair, suffered an arson attack in 2020, and was sold in 2019 for redevelopment.

The initiative to rehome the memorial was supported wholeheartedly by local councillors Shaukat Ali, Adeela Qayyum, and Shazna Azad of St Thomas’s ward, who highlighted the importance of keeping the memory of these former pupils alive within the heart of Dudley’s civic life.

The plaque now stands prominently within Dudley Council House as a lasting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the borough’s war heroes.
