The UK government is preparing to implement a new measure aimed at reducing the cost of four popular supermarket items, part of a broader cost of living support package. Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves is spearheading this “summer of savings” campaign, which will see price cuts across major grocery retailers including Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, and Morrisons.
The details of the discounts will be officially announced on Thursday, with reports indicating import taxes on select food items will be lowered. The initiative targets essential supermarket staples such as biscuits, chocolate, and various fruits and nuts. This move comes amid growing government concern over rising food inflation, which has been exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran.
While the government has ruled out imposing mandatory price caps on essential foods like eggs, bread, and milk, ministers have engaged with supermarket chains to explore voluntary cost-cutting measures. Treasury Minister Dan Tomlinson emphasized that the government is considering multiple tools, working closely with industry players to help alleviate financial pressures on households.

Chancellor Reeves stated, “As the war in Iran pushes prices up at home, my economic plan is the right one. I will continue to make the right choices to protect households and businesses, and build a stronger and more secure Britain.”
In addition to the supermarket price cuts, the government is also extending free bus passes for children under 15. Helen Godwin, the Labour Mayor of the West of England, highlighted the success of the “Kids Go Free” scheme, which has facilitated approximately 1.4 million free journeys so far. The government plans to roll out this initiative nationwide this August, ensuring that children across the country can enjoy more affordable travel options this summer.
