New Cameras to Target Dangerous Driving on Key Birmingham Roads

Birmingham drivers will soon face penalties for specific traffic offences as the city council installs new cameras at three key locations known for dangerous rule-breaking. These cameras, set to be installed this month, aim to tackle banned turns and no-entry violations that have gone largely unenforced until now.

Initially, the new system will operate in a testing phase with warning notices issued to educate drivers about the changes. Enforcement with fines will begin in the new year, focusing first on improving driver behaviour through clear signage and road markings. Repeat offenders, however, will face fines as part of the city’s efforts to enhance safety and better control traffic flow.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, Birmingham’s transport lead, explained the purpose behind the new measures: “These new powers will help to make our roads safer by reducing dangerous driving behaviours like making banned turns and ignoring no-entry signs. It will also allow for more effective local control over traffic flow and safety. When enforcement action does begin, our focus will be on education. New signage and road markings give motorists the opportunity to adjust their behaviour. We may also issue valid PCNs with no fine payable initially.”

This initiative is part of a wider push in Birmingham that includes expanded 30mph speed limits and additional speed cameras, all designed to make the city’s roads safer for everyone.
