New enforcement cameras have been activated in Blackheath town centre, signalling a fresh approach to controlling vehicle access in certain areas. Drivers are now required to adhere to recent restrictions, with penalties reaching up to £70 for those who violate the rules. However, a reduced fine of £35 is available if the penalty is paid within 14 days.
At the heart of these changes is the introduction of a bus gate, which has been operational between Birmingham Road and Long Lane. This measure prohibits cars from entering the designated zone, which is exclusively reserved for buses.
Sandwell Council has confirmed that the activation of the bus gate completes the development of the new Blackheath Bus Interchange, initially opened last year. The bus gate operates continuously, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

To assist motorists, the restricted area is clearly marked with distinctive coloured road surfaces and ample signage, designed to alert drivers well in advance of the bus gate.
The council emphasises that this initiative aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians, particularly those using the bus services within the town centre, while also helping to maintain smooth traffic circulation.
Councillor Bob Jones, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for environment and enforcement, explained: “This is about ensuring bus passengers and pedestrians feel safer when visiting the town centre. Vehicles can still pass through Blackheath via Market Place following the new road layout installed last year. We encourage everyone-whether travelling by car, van, bus, bike, or on foot-to discover what Blackheath offers and to support our local businesses and market traders.”
