New Camera Technology Enforces Confusing Phone-Use Driving Laws

Advanced camera systems are being introduced on roads to catch drivers violating recently tightened mobile phone laws — rules that remain confusing to many motorists.

While most people understand it is illegal to call or text while driving, fewer realize that the law now prohibits touching a phone for almost any reason when behind the wheel, even if the vehicle is stationary at traffic lights or in heavy traffic.

Despite these regulations, it is still common to see drivers using their phones to check messages, scroll social media, or change music — all actions banned under the new laws.

Additional restrictions apply to using phones as sat navs: devices must be secured in a holder before the journey starts, and holding a phone while navigating is prohibited.

Law enforcement is gaining an upper hand with the rollout of digital cameras capable of detecting phone use while driving. Although millions of drivers currently evade penalties, these cameras are being installed in various parts of the country and will become more widespread in the coming years.

Drivers should familiarize themselves with these rules to avoid fines and improve road safety.
