New 20mph Speed Limit Introduced on Dudley Street in Sandwell

Motorists traveling through the Black Country borough of Sandwell, Midlands, now encounter a 20mph speed limit on Dudley Street, near the A41 Black Country New Road in West Bromwich. This new restriction marks a reduction from the previous 40mph limit on the Black Country New Road and 30mph limits on adjoining streets, resulting in a rapid transition to a 20mph zone for drivers exiting these roads.

In addition to Dudley Street, several nearby roads in Great Bridge, including Claypit Lane and Butler Street, have long had 20mph speed limits in place. These measures date back to 2013 and form part of a broader traffic calming strategy designed to lower vehicle speeds and improve safety near local schools such as George Salter Academy and Ryders Green Primary School.

Councillor Keith Allcock, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways, emphasized that residents’ concerns about road safety have driven the implementation of these speed limits. He highlighted that reducing speed limits significantly decreases both the frequency and severity of road collisions.

While most residential roads across the UK maintain a 30mph limit, there is a growing trend for local authorities to introduce 20mph zones in key areas to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Nearby Birmingham City Council has similarly adopted 20mph limits on numerous central routes, including The Priory Queensway and Dale End.

This initiative aligns with wider road safety efforts in the region, reflecting a commitment to safer, calmer streets for all road users.
