NatWest Launches AI and Data Ethics Accreditation for 60,000 Employees

NatWest has introduced a groundbreaking bank-wide accreditation programme in AI and Data Ethics, aimed at promoting the responsible use of artificial intelligence across its operations. Building on its innovative partnership with the University of Edinburgh, this initiative will be rolled out to approximately 60,000 employees, including those at branches in Birmingham.

The comprehensive programme is set to launch its first modules in June, with full deployment expected by October. Designed to be completed within two to three months, it provides staff with vital knowledge and practical tools to navigate the ethical challenges posed by AI technologies.

Dr. Paul Dongha, Head of Responsible AI and AI Strategy at NatWest Group, emphasized the importance of equipping colleagues with these skills: “As AI becomes increasingly embedded in how we serve customers and run our bank, it’s crucial that our team members have the confidence and expertise to use it responsibly. This accreditation builds on our existing AI and data ethics training, offering practical guidance to identify risks, ask critical questions, and make informed decisions.”

The programme features eight structured e-learning modules aligned with NatWest’s AI Ethics Principles, complemented by a collaborative half-day workshop focused on real-world applications. It equips employees with methods to assess and manage ethical risks, including ensuring AI-driven decisions are fair, unbiased, and based on ethically sourced data.

Upon completion, participants will receive an internal NatWest Group accreditation in AI and Data Ethics, along with a commitment to ongoing education as AI technologies and standards continue to evolve.

One pilot participant shared their experience: “AI is already becoming an invaluable part of my daily work, helping me access information quickly and assist customers more efficiently while ensuring they receive appropriate support. This training is essential for using AI tools responsibly and confidently, especially as their role expands in the future.”
