Nationwide has announced increases in interest rates on its one and two-year Fixed Rate Bonds and Fixed Rate Cash ISAs, a move that coincides with upcoming changes to ISA limits. This building society, which maintains branches in Birmingham among other locations, unveiled these enhanced rates on Wednesday.
For Fixed Rate Cash ISAs, the new offerings include a 1 Year Fixed Rate Cash ISA with an attractive rate of 4.50% AER (tax-free, fixed) and a 2 Year Fixed Rate Cash ISA at 4.55% AER (tax-free, fixed). Similarly, for Fixed Rate Bonds, customers can benefit from a 1 Year Fixed Rate Branch Bond and 1 Year Fixed Rate Online Bond, each offering 4.50% AER (gross, fixed), as well as 2 Year Fixed Rate Branch and Online Bonds at 4.55% AER (gross, fixed).
These adjustments come in anticipation of a reduction in the cash ISA limit to £12,000 from next year, a policy change set to be implemented under Labour Party Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey. This transition was initially announced by the former Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Richard Stocker, Nationwide’s Head of Savings, commented on the changes: “We’re pleased to be increasing rates on our one and two-year Fixed Rate Bonds and Fixed Rate Cash ISAs for the second time this month. These products are ideal for savers seeking a shorter-term option with the assurance of a guaranteed return. Our customers benefit from identical rates whether they choose to save online or in branch, underscoring our dedication to offering choice and fulfilling our Branch Promise, supported by the UK’s largest branch network.”
In a related development, a Nationwide customer has recently pledged to continue efforts to enhance member representation after falling short in a historic bid to join the building society’s board. James Sherwin-Smith obtained approximately 12.5% of the vote-equivalent to support from 75,939 Nationwide members-during the mutual’s annual general meeting.
Building societies, which are owned by their members, remain among the few sectors in the UK that legally enable customers to nominate peers for board elections. Nonetheless, the last member-nominated director on Nationwide’s board stepped down in 2002, and currently, none of the 42 building societies in Britain have member-nominated directors on their boards.
