Seven years after Brian Egg’s disappearance, the haunting mystery surrounding his death remains unresolved. Egg, 65, last seen at his San Francisco residence in May 2018, was found brutally mutilated. His torso was discovered hidden in a fish tank filled with harsh chemicals, but crucial parts—his head and hands—are still missing.
Known locally as a dedicated caretaker of his neighborhood and a former bartender at The Stud, a notable gay bar in San Francisco, Egg’s sudden vanishing alarmed neighbors. In the months following his disappearance, residents reported odd activity around his home, including the presence of unidentified individuals who appeared homeless.
In August 2018, neighbors became increasingly suspicious when they saw a man inside Egg’s house mopping extensively, with soapy water flooding out under the door and a strong bleach scent filling the air. The following day, a biohazard cleanup crew arrived in a white van marked with “Aftermath Services,” intensifying the neighbors’ concerns.

Police investigation uncovered Egg’s decomposed torso concealed behind a picture in a small room, submerged in chemicals, and restrained with an iron sawhorse, carpet, and empty Drano bottles. The autopsy revealed he had died from blunt force trauma. Parts of his body were severed, but some feet remained inside the tank within socks, a grim and chilling detail. DNA testing confirmed the remains as Egg’s.
Two men, Michael Silva and Robert McCaffrey, were arrested in connection with the case but were never formally charged. Silva was held on a parole violation unrelated to Egg’s death and released in 2023, while McCaffrey was released shortly after his 2018 arrest. Devon Egg, Brian’s brother, expressed frustration over the silence regarding the case and Silva’s release but chose to forgive the police for mishandling the investigation.
The police have faced criticism for their failure to act promptly despite neighbor reports of suspicious activity in the lead-up to the discovery. Although officers visited the property multiple times before finding the body, they never entered the home during those visits.
