‘My job was forcing me to miss my kids growing up – I knew something had to give’

Andy Billage, a dedicated father of two from Stourbridge, faced a tough choice: continue working a relentless 365-days-a-year job managing a busy airport hotel or change course to be present for his young family. After 17 years in hospitality, Andy chose the latter, launching Kitchen Makeovers, a business that offers affordable, quick kitchen transformations.

In his previous role, Andy’s phone never stopped ringing, and his workdays stretched from before his children woke up until after they went to bed. “I never saw my family,” he shared. “It’s a 365-day-a-year job—I’d be out before the kids were up and back after they were in bed. I didn’t want to miss them growing up.”

Since starting his business in January, Andy has gained momentum, securing a steady stream of customers. Unlike a full kitchen renovation, which can take weeks and cost a small fortune, Kitchen Makeovers revitalizes kitchens with replacement doors, worktops, and fittings, making the process faster and more affordable.

Andy’s approach keeps costs down by eliminating the need for a showroom. He visits clients’ homes, collaborating directly to visualize their new kitchen look. “In the current climate, people are really conscious of cost,” he explained. “What we’re offering is a way to get a fresh new look in just a few days, without the expense or upheaval.”

Though Andy still works hard, his flexible schedule allows him to enjoy family moments previously missed. “If I pop out for an appointment in the evening, I’m still there for bath time or dinner. I recently took the kids to the zoo during half term—something I’d never have been able to do before. We’ve got trips planned this year, and it feels like a completely different way of living. That was the goal from the start.”

Andy’s story highlights the importance of balancing work and family, proving it’s possible to pursue your passion without sacrificing precious time with loved ones.
