Mum’s heartfelt plea after tragic cycling accident claims son’s life

Tracy Boswell has issued a heartfelt plea to parents after her 17-year-old son, Daniel, tragically died following a cycling accident on 21 May 2024. Two years after leaving home for college, Daniel never returned, leaving his family devastated.

The Tamworth mother recalled how her son was cycling to Nuneaton on his beloved bike when he collided with a delivery driver who was on foot, unloading laminated flooring from his van. Tracy explained, “He bumped into a delivery driver - not the van itself - and did a 360 somersault over the man, landing heavily on the right side of his head.”

At the time of the accident, Daniel was not wearing a helmet despite Tracy’s repeated requests. She has since made a passionate appeal to parents to encourage their children to wear helmets when cycling.

After the collision, Daniel lost consciousness and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Tracy described racing to the hospital from Tamworth, supported by her sister to avoid an accident of her own.

Doctors informed the family that Daniel had suffered a fractured skull and a significant brain bleed, leaving him in critical condition.

“They had to place a bolt in his head to monitor the bleed,” Tracy said. Daniel was transferred to intensive care where an urgent operation was performed to drain the swelling on his brain. However, the swelling was so severe that surgeons could not close his skull, leaving it covered only by a bandage.

Tracy recounted the heartbreaking moment she first saw Daniel on life support, a sight that left her unable to stay in the room. “It literally broke me,” she said.

Tragically, Daniel passed away the following day on 22 May 2024.

Reflecting on her loss, Tracy said, “Losing my own son, my own flesh and blood, is something you can never get over. It’s just not fair. Why is life so cruel? Why do we have to live with all this grief?”

In response to this tragedy, Tracy has dedicated herself to raising awareness about the crucial importance of wearing helmets while cycling. She regrets not instilling the habit in Daniel from a young age and urged other parents to encourage helmet use early on.

“I wish I had taught him to wear a helmet from when he was young,” she said. “Kids today may think helmets aren’t fashionable, but safety should always come first. Helmets save lives - like they could have saved my son.”

Tracy’s message to parents is clear: “If your child enjoys cycling, please make them wear a helmet. Please encourage this from an early age to protect them. I don’t want any other family to go through the pain that we are enduring.”

She hopes that by sharing her story, other parents and children will understand the vital role helmets play in preventing such heartbreaking losses.
