At the time of her disappearance, Michele’s children were just seven, 14, and 19 years old. For 24 years, her family and friends grappled with the mystery of her sudden vanishing, unsure if they should mourn or hold onto hope.
Barbara Byrd, Michele’s cousin, expressed mixed emotions upon hearing the news in an interview with WFMYNews2: “I want to scream, ‘she’s alive.’ For years, we didn’t know if we were grieving or waiting. My biggest question is what made her leave in December 2001?”

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Michele is “alive and well” but respected her request to keep her location private. Barbara added, “I understand she doesn’t want contact. I’m not angry. The most important thing now is that she’s alive.”
Michele’s daughter Amanda shared a heartfelt statement on Facebook, revealing the complex emotions stirred by her mother’s return. “I am ecstatic, furious, heartbroken—all over the map,” Amanda wrote. “Will we have a relationship again? I don’t know yet. My initial reaction is yes, but then I remember the pain.”
Amanda reflected on their past bond: “Despite our arguments, I remember the smiles, the happy times, and the love we shared. Both my parents deserve respect for their choices and feelings.”
The mystery of Michele’s disappearance has left many questions unanswered. The Facebook page “Bring Michele Hundley Smith Home” recalled that Michele was driving a forest-green 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport van, which was never found. The page had stated, “Michele would have never left her children by choice. We are desperate for answers and ask the community’s help for the truth.”
