James Whitlow, 44, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to stealing meat and alcohol worth £662 from Marks and Spencer and Home Bargains during a difficult period in his life. Over six incidents spanning late December to January, Whitlow, who resides in Selly Oak, succumbed to a drug addiction that fueled his actions.
Addressing the court, Whitlow expressed deep remorse: “I am not this kind of person. I have a normal life, and I truly want to move forward. Watching the footage made me realize how far I strayed—this isn’t who I am.” He emphasized that his thefts were out of character, driven by circumstances he regretted profoundly.
Since his arrest, Whitlow has been receiving support from Change Grow Live and has taken significant steps to overcome his addiction. Magistrates acknowledged his genuine remorse and efforts to rehabilitate. The court ordered Whitlow to pay £662 in compensation to the stores, prioritizing victim restitution over fines or prosecution costs.

“We see this as genuine remorse,” the magistrate noted, recognizing that Whitlow was going through a challenging phase.
Whitlow pledged, “As soon as I secure employment, I will pay that straight away.” He also apologized for his actions, marking his first courtroom appearance.
