M&S Raises Free Delivery Threshold to £75, Sparking Shopper Backlash

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced a significant change to its online delivery policy, increasing the minimum spend for free delivery from £60 to £75. This new rule, effective from May, applies to clothing, home, and beauty products and has provoked widespread dissatisfaction among shoppers.

Customers who fail to meet the £75 minimum will be charged a standard delivery fee of £3.99. The adjustment has sparked an outcry on social media, with one customer commenting on Facebook: “I’ve just noticed this and thought it was £60. Not done the order, will wait until we visit a store. It is getting beyond a joke now.” Another added, “Omg what next! Do they not want us to buy anything? £75 is a wee bit too much! That’s the last nail in the coffin for me I’m afraid.”

In a statement to The Sun, an M&S spokesperson explained the rationale behind the change: “To ensure we can continue to provide a fast and reliable delivery service for our customers, we’re updating our free delivery threshold for online orders. This has no impact on our market-leading Click & Collect service which remains completely free and is available in around 800 stores.”

Despite the delivery controversy, M&S recently celebrated success in its agriculture partnerships. The retailer recognized six exceptional farmers at the 2024 M&S Select Farm Awards held during the Balmoral Show in May. These awards highlight commitment to excellence in sustainability, innovation, animal welfare, and nurturing future farming talent.

Peter Kennedy, Head of Agriculture & Fisheries at M&S, praised the winners, emphasizing their leadership and dedication: “These winners reflect the strength, resilience and ambition within our Select Farm community. From environmental leadership and innovation to welfare excellence and emerging talent, they are setting new benchmarks for British and Irish agriculture. We’re proud to work alongside farmers who are not only producing outstanding food, but actively shaping a more sustainable future for the industry.”
