Mother’s Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Kind and Patient’ Son Taken by Sudden Illness

A Birmingham mother has paid a moving tribute to her 18-year-old son, Ahmed Qureshi, who tragically passed away last month after succumbing to a sudden and unpredictable illness.

Ahmed, a devoted student at Handsworth Grammar School, was known for his infectious love for life and passion for football. Despite the challenges he faced, including frequent hospital visits due to a medical condition called oesophageal stricture, Ahmed remained resilient and optimistic.

In a touching letter shared by assistant headteacher Mohammed Mohsin, Ahmed’s mother expressed her gratitude to the school community. She reflected on how Ahmed’s friends stood by his side during his final hospital stay, sharing one last meaningful memory before his passing.

She said: “I am honoured that Handsworth Grammar School will always be a part of his legacy. His beautiful friends that were by his side until the end were a part of that legacy and I’m grateful they all met at that wonderful school.”

Ahmed’s last medical procedure took place in September 2023, amid his A Levels. The support from the staff and friends during this period was instrumental in his recovery at the time. Tragically, it was an unrelated, random illness that ultimately took his life.

Though Ahmed’s time was cut short, his mother remembers him as a loving, happy, kind, and patient young man. “Words fall short. He would comfort me. He continues to comfort me from beyond the grave,” she said.

Ahmed’s brothers will carry on their education at Handsworth Grammar, ensuring that his legacy at the school lives on.
