Mother Transforms Health to Better Support Disabled Daughter

Sara Matthewson, a devoted mother and full-time carer for her daughter Sophie, has made a remarkable lifestyle change to improve her own health. Living in Northfield, Sara, 51, found herself neglecting her well-being while focusing on caring for Sophie, who has a disability.

Over the years, Sara’s weight increased significantly, reaching just over 21 stone 8 pounds. Recognising the need to prioritise her own health to be the best possible support for her daughter, she joined a local Slimming World group in Cotteridge.

With consistent effort and the encouragement of her group, led by consultant Nickie, Sara successfully lost an impressive six-and-a-half stone. This transformation has brought more than just physical changes; it has improved her overall happiness, confidence, and energy levels.

“I realised that if I wanted to continue being the best mum and carer I could be for Sophie, I needed to look after my own health too,” Sara explained. “I feel healthier, happier and more confident than I have in years. I have more energy and I’m investing in my future and in being here for Sophie.”

Sara now weighs 15 stone 1 pound and credits the support from her Slimming World group as vital to her success. The group provided accountability, encouragement, and a sense of belief, especially during challenging times.

“Even when life was difficult, there was always someone cheering me on. Thank you, Nickie and everyone at the group,” she said.

Her story is a powerful reminder that carers, who often dedicate themselves to others, must also remember to care for themselves. Nickie, the Slimming World consultant, praised Sara’s commitment and hopes her journey inspires others balancing caregiving with personal health.

“Sara’s achievement is absolutely incredible. She shows amazing commitment every day as a full-time carer and is an inspiration to our whole group. We are so proud of her,” Nickie said. “No matter how busy life gets, you are worth the care too. With the right support and a plan that fits your life, amazing things are possible.”

Slimming World sessions are held at Cotteridge Church Hall, Pershore Road South, Cotteridge, B30 3EJ, every Friday at 9.30am.
