Motability Scheme Pauses Mandatory Black Box Rule from May 22

Starting Friday, May 22, the Motability Scheme, overseen by Motability Operations for Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) claimants, will pause its mandatory black box rule. This decision follows significant backlash from customers regarding the Drive Smart scheme, a system designed to monitor and improve driving habits.

Drive Smart is a compact device installed discreetly in vehicles, linking to an app on users' smartphones to provide feedback on driving behaviors such as speed, acceleration, braking, and cornering. The system aims to encourage safer driving by offering rewards redeemable at popular retailers like Asda and M&S.

Currently, the Motability Scheme supports individuals receiving Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance, Adult Disability Payment, Child Disability Payment, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, and the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement.

Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations, explained the rationale behind the pause: “We have decided to pause Drive Smart while we work with customers to understand how it can be improved. The need to reduce accidents, improve driving behaviour, and manage insurance costs remains critical for the Scheme’s long-term sustainability. Technology like Drive Smart can play an important role, but it must be clear, easy-to-use, and support the independence of the disabled people who rely on the Scheme.”

The Drive Smart app provides drivers with an individual trip score rated green, amber, or red, reflecting driving quality on each journey. Weekly scores aggregate all trips, giving more weight to longer journeys, and are pivotal in determining rewards. Users are encouraged not to worry over single poor scores but to utilize app feedback to improve their driving habits.

This pause allows Motability Operations to collaborate with users and enhance the system to better meet the needs of the Scheme’s beneficiaries.
