Most of England Set to Avoid UK Snowstorm as 36 Counties Escape Winter Blast

As a severe cold snap with temperatures dropping to -11°C targets the UK, much of England is forecast to escape heavy snowfall. Weather projections show that 36 counties in England will remain largely snow-free, while Scotland and parts of northern England prepare for up to six inches of snow.

Starting from January 3, colder conditions are expected to bring snow primarily across northern regions, including the North East of England. Across Scotland, widespread snow coverage is anticipated, with most areas showing significant accumulation on weather maps.

According to data from WX Charts, which relies on Met Desk inputs, some spots could see up to 10mm of precipitation, but snowfall will not be uniform across the affected regions.

Counties forecasted to avoid snow in England include Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, City of London, Cornwall, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Sussex, Essex, Gloucestershire, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, and Lancashire.

The snow-free list extends to Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire as well.

The Met Office’s Christmas week forecast describes mostly cloudy skies with spells of rain spreading northward, accompanied by mist and hill fog at higher elevations. Rainfall is expected to be heavier in the southwest, turning drier from the southeast by dawn, with temperatures remaining mild outside remote rural areas.

Looking ahead to Monday, the forecast predicts continued cloud cover and intermittent rain, though southern parts should see some bright spells by the afternoon. From Tuesday through Thursday, conditions are expected to stay mostly cloudy but largely settled under high pressure, with occasional rain showers. Temperatures will drop further as Christmas Day approaches, bringing colder weather across the UK.
