Morrisons is implementing a significant upgrade to its checkout systems in all UK stores, including locations in Birmingham. The supermarket giant has introduced advanced technology to both its self-service and manned checkouts, aiming to improve efficiency and customer experience.
The refreshed tills feature upgraded scanning capabilities designed to simplify barcode reading, enabling quicker transactions. This initiative is part of a nationwide replacement of older checkout models with sleek, slimmer, and more modern units. The rollout began in May 2025 and is expected to be completed shortly.
A Morrisons spokesperson commented, “Since May 2025, we have been updating a significant number of both colleague-operated and self-service checkouts across all our stores to enhance efficiency. The refresh is due to complete very soon. This new technology ensures we continue delivering excellent service levels to our customers now and into the future.”

The recent upgrade was completed at the Swindon superstore on Dorcan Way. Customers have noted the new tills’ sleeker design and improved barcode scanning capabilities. One shopper mentioned, “They definitely feel new and shiny, a lot sleeker and thinner than the old ones.” Another said, “The new tills are much better at scanning barcodes since the update.”
This technological enhancement aligns with Morrisons’ broader efforts to improve the in-store shopping experience. Recently, Morrisons celebrated British Pie Week by offering discounts and special deals, demonstrating the chain’s commitment to customer value alongside its operational improvements.
