Morrisons has revealed plans to close 100 stores next month, delivering a significant setback to shoppers, especially in smaller communities. The closures will mainly affect the smaller Morrisons Daily outlets commonly found on high streets and in local neighborhoods.
A spokesperson for Morrisons explained, “We continuously review the performance of all company-owned stores within our Convenience business. After a thorough review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close a number of stores over the coming months.”
The company highlighted that many of the stores marked for closure were part of the McColl’s acquisition and have struggled financially for years despite remedial efforts. Morrisons also cited recent “significant cost increases” driven by government policy changes as a contributing factor behind the decision.

The store closures will also lead to the shutdown of local Post Office services housed within Morrisons outlets, a move that has frustrated residents. However, Morrisons expressed willingness to support nearby retailers in hosting Post Office branches to maintain community access to these services.
In a contrasting move, Morrisons has launched an engaging digital football sweepstake through its More Card app, offering customers the chance to win a million-point jackpot. Fans can participate by selecting their teams from June 8 to June 24, with winners receiving rewards ranging from bakery treats and ice creams to money-off vouchers and millions of More Points.
Gareth Lloyd, Head of Loyalty at Morrisons, said, “Our football sweepstake is a fun way for customers to celebrate the summer of sport. Whether it’s bakery delights or money off, we want everyone to enjoy the excitement and rewards the tournament brings.”
For shoppers who don’t use the More Card app, Morrisons plans to roll out special match-day deals to ensure all customers can join in the football festivities, especially during England and Scotland’s upcoming games.
