Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to introduce AI-powered self-checkouts in 200 of its stores, a change set to significantly speed up queues and improve the shopping experience. This innovation allows customers to identify and correct missed or mis-scanned items themselves directly at the checkout.
The supermarket chain, which competes with Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, and others, signed a long-term partnership with retail technology firm Everseen following a successful trial earlier this year. Everseen’s system uses real-time computer vision to detect items that may not have been scanned correctly, prompting shoppers to resolve any issues via the checkout screen without needing staff intervention.
Francesca Bezoari, Morrisons’ store support office director, highlighted that the new technology “enables us to provide the fast and seamless checkout experience our customers want.” She added that the system helps maintain the high level of service for which Morrisons is known, supporting colleagues in their roles.

Joe White, chief executive of Everseen, explained that “the best AI solutions deliver measurable results without compromising the customer experience.” He noted that their Vision AI platform helps Morrisons improve customer satisfaction scores, demonstrating that operational efficiency and service quality can go hand in hand.
The AI technology cross-checks scanned items with the contents of the trolley and alerts shoppers to any potential scanning errors. Details on which specific stores will receive the technology next and the timeline for full rollout have not yet been disclosed by Morrisons.
In addition to this, Morrisons is also the first UK retailer to introduce Instacart’s AI-powered Caper smart trolleys. David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart, shared that “Caper smart trolleys represent a new era for in-store grocery shopping, making the physical store as intelligent and personalised as the best online experience.” He explained that these trolleys help customers stay on budget and discover new products directly in the aisles, enhancing the overall shopping experience. Morrisons’ partnership with Instacart reflects a shared commitment to making weekly shopping easier and more enjoyable through technology.
