Morrisons has announced a significant change affecting its convenience store customers across the UK, including locations in Birmingham. Dozens of Morrisons Daily stores will now charge a small fee for cash withdrawals made at their ATMs.
The ATMs, operated by an external provider, have traditionally offered free cash withdrawals, but this is set to end. The supermarket itself does not control the fees, as pricing decisions are made by the ATM operator.
The fee implementation has frustrated many shoppers, with users expressing their concerns on social media. One customer wrote on Facebook: “It’s free until the end of the month then they will charge. I’ve just contacted them, and they confirmed it. This is very unfair—free withdrawals have been available for years. Time to write to your MP. This feels like another tax on the public.”

Another shopper responded: “MP contacted,” showing a growing movement against the new charges.
Industry data from LINK, the UK’s ATM network operator, reveals a broader trend of ATM closures nationwide. Over the past year, the number of cash machines dropped by five per cent, leaving 42,403 ATMs in operation by December 2025. The decline in free-to-use machines is even more pronounced, falling from 52,040 in 2019 to just 33,710 today.
Cash withdrawals are also decreasing, with 832 million transactions last year—87 million fewer than in 2024, marking a nine per cent decline.
Ron Delnevo, chair of the Payment Choice Alliance, criticized the rate of ATM removals: “Since January 2018, the UK has lost 19,000 free-to-use ATMs, meaning around seven machines have been removed every day. The pace of these closures is alarming and impacts consumers’ access to cash.”
As the availability of free ATMs diminishes and fees become more common, shoppers are feeling the pinch at stores like Morrisons Daily, highlighting ongoing challenges in the UK’s cash withdrawal landscape.
