Millions Invested in New Midlands Homes to Transform Thousands of Lives

The West Midlands is set to undergo a major housing transformation with a £1.7 billion investment from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. This substantial funding will support the construction of much-needed social and affordable homes across the region.

In addition to the housing budget, the government is allocating £26.1 million to revitalize neglected wasteland areas. This includes demolishing derelict buildings, clearing outdated car parks, and redeveloping disused industrial sites, turning them into vibrant new communities.

Local councils in Birmingham, Dudley, and Solihull are also set to receive £500,000 through the Council Housebuilding Support Fund to accelerate the creation of council homes, addressing urgent local housing needs.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker will play a central role in shaping the delivery of these new homes. By collaborating closely with Homes England, he will influence the types of houses built, prioritize construction sites, and guide the allocation of grant funding to ensure developments reflect local priorities.

The government emphasizes that this approach will ensure homes are built where they are needed most, designed to fit community needs, and shaped by those who best understand the region.

Mayor Parker highlighted the importance of addressing long-standing underinvestment: “For too long, the West Midlands has suffered from a lack of affordable housing, leaving many families trapped in expensive private rentals or substandard temporary accommodations. Providing safe, affordable homes is at the heart of my ‘Homes for Everyone’ agenda. This funding allows us to expand our efforts rapidly and significantly. I’m eager to continue working with Homes England to transform lives through better housing.”

Housing Secretary Steve Reed echoed this optimism, stating, “This investment is a game-changer for thousands in the West Midlands waiting for secure, stable homes. We are empowering regional Mayors to lead the way with fresh funding to convert wastelands into homes and reduce social housing waitlists. We’re fully committed to getting construction underway swiftly and effectively.”
