Midlands Towns Face Significant Council Tax Increases

Local councils across the West Midlands are planning significant increases in council tax, seeking Government approval to raise bills by up to 9%. Normally capped at a 5% increase without special permission, these proposed hikes, if approved, would impact residents in areas such as Shropshire, Worcestershire, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Kidderminster, Telford, and Shrewsbury.

Reform-led Worcestershire Council, despite previously pledging to keep council tax low, has highlighted serious financial challenges and described their budget situation as “a mess.” Meanwhile, the Government notes that council tax rates in these parts have historically been lower than average, and these increases aim to align them closer to national norms.

It’s important to note that councils requesting permission does not guarantee the hikes will be implemented; it simply keeps the option available.

Residents are facing these potential tax hikes amid ongoing concerns about local infrastructure, including a widespread pothole crisis contributing to deteriorating road conditions.
