Midlands Towns and Cities Ranked in New List of Most Dangerous Places

A new crime ranking across England has highlighted the most dangerous towns and cities, with crime rates adjusted to reflect population size. This approach offers a clearer picture of which areas face the highest risks, rather than just tallying total offences where larger cities like London and Birmingham typically dominate.

In the Midlands, it’s Nottingham—not Birmingham—that tops the list for crime rate per capita. Nottingham ranks 10th nationally with a rate of 120.8 offences per 1,000 residents, surpassing Birmingham, which sits 17th with 113.9 crimes per 1,000 people. Birmingham’s high crime numbers are influenced by its large population of over a million, but when adjusted for size, it falls behind Nottingham.

Leicester also features in the top 20, ranking 18th. Other Midlands cities include Gloucester at 24th and Stoke-on-Trent at 27th place.

The ranking considers the likelihood of becoming a crime victim by comparing the number of offences to local population sizes. Outside London, Blackpool has the highest crime rate, followed by Manchester and Middlesbrough.

On the safer end of the spectrum, Broadland in Norfolk boasts the lowest crime rate in England and Wales, with Ribble Valley in Lancashire and Waverley in Surrey also among the areas with the least crime.
