The West Midlands is often viewed as a high-crime region, known for frequent reports of serious offences like stabbings, robberies, and assaults. Yet, this reputation doesn’t tell the whole story.
Just beyond the bustling urban centers of Birmingham and the Black Country, many smaller towns and rural villages maintain a much quieter and safer environment. These areas offer residents a welcome escape from crime and noise, while still providing easy access to city amenities for work and leisure.
A recent national study ranking violent crime across England highlighted some of the safest areas in the Midlands. Notably, Shropshire emerged as the safest county in the region, placing 254th in the country for violent crime incidents — indicating how rare such offenses are there. Known for its charming market towns such as Shrewsbury, Telford, Bridgnorth, and Market Drayton, much of Shropshire is scenic countryside with a strong community feel.

South Staffordshire also ranks highly, coming in 236th nationally. This district, neighboring Wolverhampton and Dudley, includes tranquil villages like Kinver, Codsall, and Penkridge, popular with families seeking a peaceful lifestyle close to urban conveniences.
Other Midlands districts with low violent crime levels include Lichfield (208th), North Warwickshire (175th), and Stafford (174th). These areas provide residents with both safety and a high quality of life, contrasting sharply with higher-crime locations such as Blackpool, which holds the highest violent crime rate in England. In the Midlands, Nottingham ranks 7th, with Birmingham somewhat lower at 16th.
These statistics highlight that while parts of the West Midlands do face crime challenges, many towns and villages remain safe havens, offering security and tranquility for their communities.
