Midlands MP Faces Criticism for Voting Against Wildlife Safeguards in Planning Bill

Worcester MP Tom Collins is under scrutiny following his vote against proposed amendments aimed at strengthening wildlife protections in the Government’s Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Green councillors argue that these amendments would have enhanced safeguards for local wildlife species and their habitats.

The Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which seeks to reform housebuilding regulations, has sparked controversy as it proposes to replace existing habitat protections with a more flexible approach. Developers would be allowed to provide broad environmental improvements or contribute to a nature restoration fund, rather than being bound by current, stricter conservation requirements.

On November 13, two key amendments intended to bolster protections for species such as hedgehogs, bats, and the preservation of woodlands and wetlands were voted down in the House of Commons. Despite this setback, campaigners remain hopeful that further environmental safeguards can be introduced before the bill’s final approval.

Green councillor Karen Lewing, who has actively opposed the bill alongside Worcester City Council, urged MP Collins to reconsider his stance, emphasizing the importance of protecting the community’s green spaces and biodiversity. “Our wildlife deserves more than vague promises; it needs real, enforceable protections,” she stated.

In response, MP Collins emphasized his longstanding commitment to environmental protection and assured that the Government aims to find a balance between safeguarding nature and addressing urgent housing and infrastructure needs. He acknowledged the technical complexity of the amendments and highlighted the necessity to build affordable, quality homes for those currently living in inadequate conditions.

Collins remarked, “This bill reflects our shared values — it is about protecting nature effectively while also ensuring that people in Worcester and beyond have access to decent homes.”
