Police enforced a full closure of the M54 motorway in both directions overnight following reports of injured animals on the carriageway. National Highways confirmed the closure occurred between junction 6 (Telford) and junction 7 (Wellington) early on Saturday, 29 August.
At 5:11am, traffic was initially halted for around 10 minutes before the decision to close both carriageways was implemented at approximately 5:20am to ensure the safety of motorists and allow officers to attend the scene. West Mercia Police responded promptly to the incident.
While the precise number and species of the injured animals were not disclosed, transport authorities highlighted that no significant delays developed on the approaches to the affected section during the closure. The motorway was fully reopened by around 6:00am, with traffic flowing smoothly thereafter.

The section of the M54 impacted lies just south of Wellington’s Ercall and Arleston suburbs. Junction 6 connects the motorway to the A5223, which serves as Telford’s main thoroughfare. National Highways provided timely updates throughout the incident to keep drivers informed and advised caution when passing the area.
