Midlands Motorway Speeding Soars with Over 2,500 Drivers Exceeding 70mph Limit

In recent months, over 2,500 drivers in the West Midlands have been caught exceeding the UK motorway speed limit of 70mph, highlighting a serious issue with speeding across the region’s main roads.

According to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request to West Midlands Police, numerous motorists have been recorded driving at dangerously high speeds between October and the end of April. The most extreme cases included three drivers traveling at over 130mph—the highest speeds documented in this period—while another seven were clocked between 120 and 130mph.

In total, 42 vehicles were observed speeding at over 100mph, and another 173 were recorded between 90 and 99mph, with the majority of these infractions likely occurring on motorways.

The data also shows that the national speed limit of 70mph is frequently disregarded. Cameras and police officers caught 1,395 drivers traveling between 80 and 89mph and 1,321 drivers between 70 and 79mph, underscoring how common it is for motorists to push past this legal limit.

While the official motorway speed limit generally stands at 70mph, temporary restrictions can sometimes lower this during incidents or congestion. However, most speeding violations happen at much lower speeds on local roads; for instance, a staggering 68,000 drivers were recorded driving between 30 and 39mph in areas with a 30mph limit.

Overall, nearly 110,000 speeding offenses were registered during this period. It’s important to note that not all speeding detections result in tickets, as previous investigations have shown many cases are later dropped for various reasons. Enforcement also varies greatly by location—known as a postcode lottery—with Warwickshire issuing more speeding fines than the West Midlands Police area despite having a smaller population.

These figures highlight the ongoing challenge of enforcing speed limits and keeping roads safe across the West Midlands.
