With the arrival of cooler autumn weather following a long heatwave, many people are eager to enjoy cosy day trips exploring quaint shops and sampling seasonal treats in local cafés. Autumn presents an ideal opportunity to discover new towns without travelling far from home.
Loughborough, a market town in the East Midlands just an hour’s drive or a little over an hour by train from Birmingham, has been named the best autumn day out in the UK. It topped a recent ranking of the top five cosy autumn destinations, surpassing better-known cities such as London and Edinburgh.
The ranking, compiled by budget bus company FlixBus, considered various factors including weather patterns, local transport options, walkability, and affordability, such as the cost of meals. FlixBus described Loughborough as offering “a gateway to scenic walks and historic landmarks” due to its location on the edge of the Peak District. Although smaller than major cities, the town’s cosy charm and rising popularity during the autumn months make it an attractive choice for a relaxed break.

Loughborough’s long-established market, held on Thursdays and Saturdays in the historic Market Place, adds a lively buzz to the town. On other days, visitors can explore numerous independent shops, particularly in the Ward’s End Quarter, which is well known for its unique local retailers. The area also hosts many charity shops where shoppers can find autumn-appropriate clothing.
For an authentic seasonal experience, the Great Central Railway offers heritage train journeys from Loughborough through picturesque autumnal countryside. History enthusiasts can visit John Taylor & Co, a bell foundry operating since 1839. Located in a distinctive Victorian red-bricked building, the site includes a museum showcasing bell-making processes.
Charnwood Museum, situated within Queen’s Park - a favourite spot for leisurely walks among colourful autumn leaves - offers exhibits on local history housed in a former Victorian swimming bath.
Those seeking refreshment will find numerous delightful cafés around the town. Cafe Alexa is noted for artisan pastries baked fresh daily, while Muzzy’s Turquoise Cafe and Holly’s Cafe & Cob Shop provide inviting settings for breakfast or lunch.

Google searches for ‘where to travel in October’ have surged by 60% this week, highlighting a strong interest in autumn getaways among Brits.”
