Midlands Mansion Rumoured to Be Churchill’s Secret WWII Meeting Place Hits Market

Winterdyne House, a stunning Grade II-listed Georgian mansion in Bewdley, Worcestershire, is now on the market for £3.75 million. Steeped in history, this impressive country estate dates back to 1760 and boasts seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, and breathtaking panoramic views over the River Severn.

Perched atop an elevated site, the estate also overlooks the nearby West Midlands Safari Park, home to exotic wildlife including elephants, lions, and tigers. Among the property’s unique features is a summer house converted from an old fort, once used to keep watch on river smugglers.

During World War II, Winterdyne House played a pivotal role as a headquarters for officers coordinating with the Free French forces. General Charles de Gaulle lived at the estate, and it is said that Sir Winston Churchill secretly visited to hold crucial strategy meetings aimed at defeating the Nazi regime.

Beyond its wartime legacy, the mansion later served as an elderly care home, an era remembered with a touch of humour when a resident repeatedly triggered fire alarms to see the firefighters in action.

Past owners include the philanthropic Giles Shaw, who generously opened the grounds to local children, although not without some mischievous visitors who stole flowers and shrubs.

Spanning roughly 30 acres, the estate encompasses three reception rooms, a billiards room, gym, cinema room, indoor swimming pool, and meticulously landscaped gardens. The spectacular setting offers a blend of historic charm and modern luxury.

Marketing the property, Chartwell Noble’s agent George Pickard expressed pride in representing such a remarkable home: “Winterdyne House’s elegant architecture, commanding position, and rich history truly embody the timeless allure of the English country house, a treasured legacy we are honoured to showcase for discerning buyers.”
