Drivers in the West Midlands have unexpectedly received speeding fines despite traveling under 30mph this year, a BirminghamLive investigation reveals.
While many drivers assume the speed limit in residential areas is 30mph, an increasing number of local councils are implementing 20mph zones, particularly near schools, to enhance road safety.
This shift means motorists must remain vigilant for road signs and avoid assuming that 30mph is the default limit.

Data from West Midlands Police shows that since the start of the year, 59 speeding offences were recorded where vehicles were traveling between 20mph and 29mph.
These infractions were often detected by mobile speed enforcement units strategically positioned near known traffic hotspots.
Adding to these changes, over 25 main roads across Birmingham will have their speed limits reduced to 30mph in the new year, accompanied by the introduction of new speed cameras as part of an ongoing safety initiative.
Although some drivers may feel unfairly targeted for driving below 30mph, authorities emphasize that these lower limits exist to protect vulnerable road users, especially in school zones, where extra caution is essential.
Drivers are reminded to stay alert to changing speed limits to avoid unexpected penalties and help keep communities safe.
