Midlands Council Invests £10m to Resurface 61 Roads and Combat Potholes

City of Wolverhampton Council is taking decisive action to repair the extensive damage caused by severe winter weather. With hundreds of potholes filled weekly, the council is now committing £10 million to long-term improvements aimed at resurfacing 61 roads and enhancing highways infrastructure over the next 12 months.

The investment, part of the 2026/27 Highway Capital Programme, focuses on preventing pothole formation and extending the lifespan of city roads. Instead of relying solely on reactive repairs, this initiative emphasizes durable resurfacing and surface treatments designed to reduce future maintenance needs and keep roads safer for all users.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for city transport, emphasized the council’s dedication: “Winter has always posed significant challenges for road maintenance, but our teams are tirelessly working around the clock to keep the network safe. While emergency repairs remain essential, our major investment in preventative measures, including resurfacing already underway, will substantially improve road conditions and ensure a safer, more efficient highways network.”

In addition to carriageway resurfacing, the Highway Capital Programme for 2026/27 includes upgrades to footpaths, street lighting, and car parks. The full list of roads targeted for improvement this year will be reviewed at a cabinet meeting scheduled for February 18.

Over the past five years, the council has resurfaced or treated 560 km² of carriageway, with recent projects funded through a £9.7 million programme that revitalized key routes such as Cannock Road, Neachells Lane, Wellington Road, and Lichfield Street in Bilston.

With this ongoing investment, Wolverhampton is committed to creating a more reliable and long-lasting road network for its residents.
