Midlands City Nottingham Among UK’s Lowest for Life Expectancy

Nottingham, a city in the Midlands, has emerged as one of the UK’s areas with the lowest life expectancy. Residents here face higher chances of earlier death influenced by factors such as health, diet, and lifestyle choices.

According to recent data, women in Nottingham have an average life expectancy of 80.3 years, while men live to around 76 years. This places Nottingham as the third worst in England for women’s life expectancy and within the bottom 20 overall in the UK. Notably, it ranks lower than Birmingham, where women can expect to live to 82.2 years and men to 77.4 years.

The overall list of areas with the lowest life expectancy is dominated by towns and cities in Scotland, parts of Wales, and northern England, reinforcing a stark north-south divide. For example, boys born in Blackpool have a life expectancy of just 73.9 years, contrasted with 84.6 years for boys born in Hart, Hampshire—a gap of 10.7 years, the largest in the UK.

Similarly, girls living in Glasgow have the lowest female life expectancy at 78.9 years, while those in Kensington and Chelsea enjoy the highest at 87.7 years, an 8.8-year difference.

The top 10 areas with the highest life expectancy, for both men and women, are all located in southern England, while the lowest 10 are found mostly in the north of England and Scotland. Scotland records the lowest life expectancy figures in the UK: males there live to an average of 77.4 years and females 81.3 years.

These disparities highlight ongoing regional inequalities affecting health outcomes across the UK.
