In a remarkable display of bravery, Wayne Jarvis, a 42-year-old shopkeeper from Worcester, donned in flip-flops, confronted three thieves after witnessing one steal a £1.99 greeting card from his store, Fifty Scents, on May 8. Having opened the bath and body shop last year, Wayne has already endured hundreds of pounds in losses this year alone due to shoplifting.
Security footage reveals Wayne confronting the woman caught in the act, which escalated into a physical struggle involving her two accomplices. Unfazed, Wayne managed to seize one man’s clothing and fend off another before the trio fled on foot.
Reflecting on the incident, Wayne expressed his frustration: “It’s ridiculous. They came in and stole from me. I run a retail shop—I can’t watch everyone all the time. But if I see theft, I have to act. Even though she only took a card this time, you never know what else they might have.”

Wayne recounted how he held onto the woman’s jumper to prevent her escape, but her boyfriend and another friend intervened, claiming he shouldn’t touch her despite her clear guilt. After losing hold, Wayne inspected her belongings to ensure no additional stolen items were hidden, as she had returned the card to the display, making identification difficult.
The most commonly stolen items at Fifty Scents, surprisingly, are not the cards but novelty rubber ducks priced at £7.99. Bath bombs and candles are also frequently targeted. Wayne shared his challenges dealing with persistent theft: “We’re a small independent business faced with repeated shoplifting. I confront thieves both in-store and at the door. Recently, a woman was caught taking a £2 bath bomb, but police discovered she had stolen £90 worth.”
Since opening last April, Wayne estimates losses as high as £600 since January, lamenting the lack of effective deterrents. “The law is so lax for low-value thefts that criminals feel they can get away with it. It’s frustrating knowing they can just walk away.”
Wayne has been proactive, sharing shoplifting footage on social media to warn other retailers. The theft has been reported to West Mercia Police, who confirm ongoing investigations into the attempted theft at Fifty Scents on Broad Street, Worcester.
