Khushpreet Kaur, a mother from Midland, tragically passed away after months in a coma resulting from a devastating car crash in Smethwick. The horrific accident, which occurred on December 14, 2024, also claimed the life of her two-year-old son, Shehbaz Singh.
On that day, Khushpreet was traveling in a Toyota Auris with her young son, Shehbaz, his father Amritpal Singh, and two close friends when their vehicle was struck head-on by a stolen Porsche Cayenne. The driver, Sharjeel Shahzad, was banned from driving and was speeding at 51mph in a 30mph zone while driving on the wrong side of the road.
Their toddler suffered fatal injuries and died in hospital the same day. Sadly, Khushpreet never regained full consciousness after the collision and was left in a coma.

Following the crash, Khushpreet sustained multiple severe injuries, including skull fractures, leg fractures, a spleen injury, and a traumatic brain injury. She required specialist care and was moved to Amberley Court care home in Balsall Heath. Despite ongoing medical support, her condition deteriorated.
On March 22, Khushpreet fell ill with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and feeding difficulties. She suffered acute aspiration and respiratory distress, leading to her admission to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She unfortunately did not recover from these complications.
An inquest confirmed that Khushpreet’s death was a direct result of the injuries from the crash. Coroner Adam Hodson detailed that her vulnerability to aspiration was due to altered consciousness from the traumatic brain injury sustained during the collision.
Sharjeel Shahzad admitted to causing death by dangerous driving, along with several other offenses including driving while disqualified and without insurance. He was sentenced in July last year to 15 years and four months in prison and banned from driving for over 18 years.
This heartbreaking case highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the profound loss suffered by families impacted by road collisions.
