Midland Millionaire Trades Up From Pen to Home to Help Homeless Veteran

Millionaire property developer Rick Gannon, 54, has embarked on an extraordinary journey to raise a home for a homeless veteran—starting with something as simple as a ballpoint pen.

Two weeks into his challenge, Rick has already traded his biro for a highlighter, then exchanged that for a glue stick, socks, Sony headphones, postage stamps, and even a signed script of the film Shaun of the Dead. Most recently, he acquired boxing memorabilia valued at £3,500, including Sugar Ray Leonard’s gloves and a championship belt once owned by Joe Calzaghe.

Based in Malvern, Worcestershire, and known from Channel 5’s Rich House Poor House, Rick plans to continue trading up until he can secure a property. Once attained, the home will be donated to a veterans' charity to provide shelter for a former soldier.

Rick explained his motivation: “When our servicemen and women return home, their battles don’t always end. This project isn’t about profit or fame—it’s about showing what’s possible when people unite for a cause that truly matters. No hero should ever be without a home.”

The inspiration came from Rick’s 17-year-old daughter Charlotte, who is preparing for her A-levels. Rick, a former police officer, was moved by an article about a homeless veteran who sadly took his own life. “It needs to be public knowledge that many who have risked their lives for our country end up on the streets. Simply donating a property wouldn’t raise awareness—that’s why my daughter suggested this trading challenge,” he said.

Although Rick has yet to set a specific value on the property he hopes to secure, he anticipates it will be a flat. Along the way, he has turned down some unusual offers, including tractors and ceremonial swords, due to their limited trade value.

Rick remains optimistic and inspired by the support he’s received. He has also raised £872 via GoFundMe to cover trading costs, logistics, and preparation for the final donation. His message is clear: “If you set a goal, you can achieve remarkable things.”
