Midland Family’s Christmas Lights Draw Thousands, Switched On by Torvill and Dean

Every holiday season for the past 22 years, Tony and Wendy Swift have transformed their Nuthall, Nottinghamshire, home into a dazzling Christmas spectacle that attracts visitors from miles around. Featuring half a million lights, a festive grotto, and an on-site shop offering mince pies and mulled wine, their display has become a beloved local tradition, drawing up to 30,000 visitors annually.

This year marked a special farewell event as the couple decided to retire their famous light show after raising an extraordinary £250,000 for charity over two decades. The Swifts’ final switch-on was made unforgettable by the presence of renowned ice-skating champions and hometown heroes, Torvill and Dean, who personally illuminated the display to the delight of around 6,000 spectators.

“It’s incredible to have Torvill and Dean in our kitchen,” said Tony, 66, amazed by the Olympic champions’ involvement. “They’re not just Nottingham legends but national icons. Having them here to mark our last year felt perfect.” The pair even enjoyed tea and took photos with visitors, adding to the magical atmosphere of the evening.

Tony shared that the first seeds of the idea were planted in 2003 after the loss of his father-in-law to cancer. “He was cared for at Hayward House Hospice, which inspired us to start the lights to raise funds for them,” he explained. Alongside their son Adam, who helps with the extensive decoration process each year, the Swifts have balanced dedication and generosity to make their festive display a beacon of community spirit.

Michelle Dorman, senior community fundraising manager at Nottingham Hospitals Charity, praised the family’s efforts: “The Swifts have raised a phenomenal amount for Hayward House, supporting therapies and services for patients with terminal illnesses. Their passion and commitment over 22 years have truly made a difference.”

With the final switch-off, Tony and Wendy close a heartfelt chapter, leaving behind a legacy of joy, generosity, and festive cheer that will be remembered for years to come.
