Midland Café Owner Speaks Out Against ‘Soul Destroying’ Negative Reviews, Urges Customers to ‘Think Twice’

Charlie Mainprice, owner of The Sugar Loaf tea room in Ryemarket Shopping Centre, Stourbridge, has publicly addressed recent negative Google reviews that she describes as “soul destroying.” The Sugar Loaf enjoys a strong 4.6-star rating overall, but a recent one-star review concerning breakfast service has deeply affected Charlie and her team.

The disputed review detailed an incident where a customer attempted to order breakfast at 11:42 a.m., just three minutes before the café’s breakfast service cutoff at 11:45 a.m. According to the reviewer, staff firmly refused the order, claiming breakfast had ended, despite the clock still showing time remained. The reviewer also noted that another couple faced a similar experience and left without ordering. Frustrated, the customer expressed disbelief that the café would deny service so close to advertised times and vowed never to return.

In response, Charlie took to social media to explain her side and appeal for understanding. She emphasized that while her team works tirelessly to please every customer, occasional misunderstandings happen. She clarified that the café stopped serving breakfast at 11:45 a.m. to smoothly transition to the lunch menu and, by the time of the incident, many breakfast items were already sold out. Charlie also highlighted the professionalism and courtesy of the staff involved.

Her heartfelt statement read in part: “It is soul-destroying when reading these reviews. We are an independent business that values every single customer. If you’re unhappy, please come and speak to us directly so we can try to make things right. Negative reviews can hurt deeply, especially when no chance was given to address concerns.”

Charlie urged customers to “think twice before leaving a negative review” and encouraged those who have had positive experiences to share their feedback online. She expressed gratitude for ongoing support and confidence in her team’s dedication to excellent service.
