Met Office Predicts Potential Snowfall as Colder Weather Approaches the UK

The UK is likely to experience a dip in temperatures and the possibility of snowfall in the coming weeks, according to the Met Office. Meteorologists have indicated an ‘increased chance’ that colder weather will move in, bringing wintry conditions to parts of Britain.

In its long-range forecast covering Monday, January 19, to Wednesday, January 28, the Met Office explained the weather will be influenced by a clash between Atlantic weather systems from the west and colder, high-pressure conditions from the east. Initially, milder weather from the Atlantic will dominate, causing changeable conditions with showers or extended periods of rain, particularly in western areas, while eastern regions will generally remain drier. Temperatures during this period are expected to hover around the seasonal average.

However, toward the end of the forecast period, there is a growing likelihood of a shift to colder conditions. Although some uncertainty remains, this change raises the chance of snow across various parts of the country.

Looking further ahead, from Thursday, January 29, through to Thursday, February 12, the Met Office predicts slowly evolving weather patterns. A typical setup with low pressure to the west or southwest and high pressure to the northeast is expected to increase the chances of cold spells affecting the UK and bring the risk of wintry hazards. While confidence in the detailed forecast for February is lower, there is potential for more unsettled weather later in the month and a gradual return to average temperatures.
