Met Office Predicts First Snowfall of the Season in UK Next Week

The Met Office has forecast the UK’s first wintry snow of the season could arrive next week, with the greatest likelihood in northern areas, particularly Scotland. Meteorologist Simon Partridge outlined the “potential” for snowfall by the end of next week, though the exact extent remains uncertain.

Current models suggest snow will primarily affect Scotland, as cold air from the north pushes southward. However, a competing flow of warmer air from the south could limit the spread of wintry conditions further down the country. This interplay means the situation is still fluid and subject to change.

Partridge explained, “There is a possibility of snow by the end of next week and into the weekend. Various computer models indicate some cold air moving in from the north, which may bring snow to northern regions, especially Scotland.”

He added that the balance between warm and cold air masses will decide the final weather outcome. “Warm air is trying to push up from the south, while cold air is pressing down from the north. It won’t take much for warm air to dominate, keeping conditions similar to recent mild weather.”

Despite this, the chance of colder air spreading southwards cannot be ruled out. “Currently, any snow is most likely limited to Scotland,” Partridge said, “but it’s possible that cold air could advance further south. The forecast is still evolving, and we will monitor how it develops over the coming days.”
