The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as snow begins to affect Birmingham and surrounding areas from today. The alert extends to parts of northwest England, the East Midlands, and southern England, effective from midnight until midday.
Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe during the icy conditions. The Met Office advises allowing at least five extra minutes for journeys to avoid rushing, which reduces the risk of slips and falls. Pedestrians are encouraged to stick to pavements along main roads, which are more likely to have been treated for ice. Cyclists should also prefer main roads for safer travel.
Drivers are advised to check road conditions and public transport timetables before leaving, and to be prepared for possible delays or closures caused by the wintry weather. Extra travel time should be incorporated to navigate potentially hazardous roads safely.

Northern Ireland faces a similar yellow warning from midnight to 10 a.m. on Friday, with up to 2 cm of snow expected following a mix of rain, sleet, and hill snow on Thursday evening. The same safety advice applies for pedestrians and cyclists.
Additionally, parts of England and Wales are under a snow and ice warning from midnight until midday Friday, where up to 5 cm of snow could accumulate on higher ground in Wales and northwest England. Showers lasting up to three hours may cause travel disruption as the snow spreads southeastwards.
With winter weather impacting a broad area, the Met Office emphasizes the importance of preparation and caution for all travelers.
