Met Office Advises Caution as Significant Snowfall Threatens UK Roads

The Met Office has issued a serious warning about heavy snow expected to hit parts of the UK on Thursday, November 20. An amber weather alert is in force from 5am to 9pm in the north east of England and Yorkshire and Humber, signaling significant snow accumulations – with up to 25cm forecasted in some areas.

Officials stress that it will be safer for many people to avoid driving during the snow event. The Met Office recommends that, whenever possible, individuals opt for alternative travel methods to reduce risks on the roads. For those who must drive, they advise several safety measures to navigate icy and snowy conditions more securely.

Drivers should use dipped headlights and accelerate gently while maintaining low revolutions, shifting quickly to higher gears. Starting in second gear can help prevent wheel slip. Maintaining a steady speed with increased distance from other vehicles is crucial. On downhill stretches, a low gear should be used to avoid reliance on brakes; if skidding occurs, steering into the skid without abrupt braking or removing hands from the wheel is essential for control.

The Met Office also highlights the importance of preparing for potential power cuts during severe weather. Simple precautions such as gathering torches, spare batteries, and a charged mobile phone power pack can make a significant difference if power is lost.

For those who may become isolated due to snow, key safety tips include maintaining a consistent indoor temperature day and night, turning off electrical heaters and fires before sleeping, safeguarding pets by keeping them warm, and preventing frozen pipes by opening cabinet doors around plumbing. Staying indoors, dressing warmly, and closing internal doors to retain heat are also advised.

Support systems are available for vulnerable individuals, including older adults and those with existing health conditions, who may require help with food or medical supplies. The British Red Cross Support Line (0808 196 3651) is open for assistance. Individuals concerned about their health should contact NHS 111 or NI:DIRECT in Northern Ireland for guidance.

By taking these steps and staying informed, communities can better weather the challenges posed by the forthcoming snow.
